Sometimes I think of my day to day life as a war between my brain’s insistence on doing interesting things and my body’s insistence on sitting the hell down and chilling the hell out. It’s an interesting little dichotomy that goes on in my head, and generally the lazy wins because time not taken up by work or family is fleeting and by the time it’s left on its own my brain is ready to give in to the body. So the modern day Morpheous known as television tends to win in the end.
It seems the inner nagging is getting louder so I’m starting a program of self-improvement. This here blog is playing the part of organizing my brain. In the course of a day I run across lots of things that sound interesting and I promise myself I’m going to look into them. Anyone want to proffer a guess about how often I actually do look into them? Let’s just say my stream of consciousness tends to get distracted by shiny objects easily. So I’ve decided this blog is going to be an exercise in mental discipline. I set myself the goal of looking into interesting (to me) things and writing about them here. So if I stay on target the occasional visitor will probably see an encyclopedia of things that I find interesting or amusing from day to day. I make absolutely no guarantee about posting frequency, but the editorial goal is a at least 3 times per week and the more realistic goal is once per week.
The other goal here is to improve my writing, hopefully make it more readable. The most common advice from successful writers seems to be ‘practice’ so the plan is to fling my work into the ethernet and see what happens. Feel free to chime in with constructive criticism, advice, or general tomfoolery. Destructive criticism is not welcome and trolls can go live in a van down by the river where they belong.
Let’s not fool ourselves here though. I’m still going to watch a lot of tv and play a video game or two, and I can’t go to the bathroom without something to read. So you’re probably going to see a lot of reviews of whatever piece of pop culture I’m currently using to entertain myself. The children may even be mentioned from time to time. Lastly, if we’re being honest…. an occasional rant may show up because The Mean has to be heard by someone (or least put somewhere I can pretend someone will read it) on those days my wife insists on leaving the room while I complain.
The last reason for a new blog? It’s just like the name at the top of the page says. And ‘Because I Can’ seemed a little more appropriate, albeit less colorful, than ‘Why the Hell Not?’.
